Biography

Philippe Boesmans (born 17 May 1936) is a Belgian composer. He was born in Tongeren,  and studied at the Conservatory in Liège.  Member of the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles since its beginning in 1962, he progressively developped more interest in writing music, and in 1971 won the Prix Italia for his composition Upon La-Mi. At that time he began to work as a producer for the radio station RTBF. Very intuitive composer, his catalogue contains pieces in every category, among which concertos for piano, violin, and a piece for aulochrome and orchestra, commissionned by the Südwestrundfunk which created the piece in 2002.  Since 1985 he is composer in residence at the La Monnaie opera house in Brussels.  His fifth opera, Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne, based on a play of Witold Gombrowicz, was premiered at l'Opera de Paris in January 2009.
