Biography

1955 Born in Havana, Cuba, on 30 November
1960 Immigrated to the USA, where he grew up in New York City and Chicago.
1970- First attempts at composition, inspired by Ives, Mahler, Berg, Messiaen, Stockhausen and Xenakis.
1971-5 Studied composition with Leonard Stein and Morton Subotnick and music at California Institute of the Arts; thereafter destroyed almost all previous works.
1976 Moved to Chicago (factory worker) and later to Idaho and Arizona.
1977 Relocated in spring to Portland, Oregon, where he produced film and video pieces.

Many tenting, mountain climbing and motorcycle trips through the American and Canadian West.

Basically self-taught in composition.
1979 Relocated to Seattle, Washington, in November.

Began degree in science, miscellaneous activities.
c. 1982 Returned to composition.
1983 Relocated to Methow Valley in northern Washington in spring.

Forestry and agricultural work; intensive involvement with environmental policy.
1987- Lengthy stay in Germany.
1990 Relocated to Europe in autumn.
1991 Summer in Lapp mountains and Iceland.
1991- Resident in Mölltal in Upper Carinthia (Austria).
1992 Summer in Iceland.
2000-01 Visiting artist in video and acoustical design at the Karlsruhe Art and Media Technology Center.
Orchestral and chamber music performed at major contemporary music festivals in Europe, including Donaueschingen, Wien modern, Frankfurt and Salzburg.
Grants and awards from the Academy of Arts (Berlin), Ernst von Siemens Foundation (Munich), Paul Sacher Foundation (Basel), Heinrich Strobel Foundation (Southwest German Radio), Austrian State Scholarship.
