The inspiration for Ferragosto per Trombe, pianoforte e batteria (1997) was the story of the same name by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, a polish writer permamently resident in Italy. The composition is not a musical illustration, but rather a poetic attempt to capture the atmosphere of the night between the fifteenth and sixteenth of August, which since pagan time has been considered to be the summer solstice. It is a time when self-destructive emotions, fuelled by strong winds, achieve their apogee. Down on the sixteenth of Augutst heralds a new-born optimism.
