Anders Eliasson“s Intermezzi is a colourful, expressive work organically composed and consisting of nine sections; four intermezzos separate five sections entitled Leggiero, Leggiero, Agile, Deserto, Eco. The first Intermezzo begins with the solo oboe held note at 1'10; Leggiero at 2'10; the second intermezzo at 3'07 just prior to the soft clarinet solo; Agile at 4' 18; the third Intermezzo at 5'26; Deserto at 6'58. The fourth intermezzo, subtitled "Infrazione" ("infringement" or "violation") begins at 8'40 at the introduction of the wind chimes; Eco at 11'29. The organic nature of the work relies on ritornello-like recurrences of significant gestures, including the grace-note figure heard in the first measure of the work which is brought back,, imitated, re-orchestrated and augmented throughout the work, including in the Eco. Intermezzi exploits a wide palette of colors with brass trills, string harmonics, woodwind multiphonics, and expressive use of percussion instruments. Intermezzi was commissioned by the Swedish National Concert Institute (Svenska Rikskonserter) for KammarensembleN's Swedish tour in February 1989. Intermezzi is subtitled "Omaggio a Ligeti e Lutoslawski" in honor of the two composers' works also on the tour program. Text: Katherine Powers. From Phono Suecia nr 57 (1992)
